Christopher Hitchens’ was definitely right about one thing…
Actually, the late near-militant atheist author was right about a number of things I’m sure.
But there was one thing in particular that I found myself nodding my head in total agreement with Hitchens about–the philosophical/ethical bankruptcy of extremely Liberal forms of “Christianity” such as Unitarian Universalism.
Why do I put “Christianity” in quotes?
Well, let me let Hitchens demonstrate why in this interview he gave a few years ago with Unitarian Universalist minister Marilyn Sewell:
It’s tragically ironic that one of the most vehement atheists of our time provides one of the best refutations of “Christianity” that denies the central tenant of the Gospel message.
I’m reminded of one of my favorite scenes from The Simpsons, which can be seen in the first 20 seconds of the following clip:
———–
“But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”
1Corinthians 15:13-19
