The Space Between

This past Tuesday, CharlotteONE: began it’s Spring ’11 season. The message, given by Executive Director (and my good friend and colleague!) David Hickman was called “The Glamor Age” and was the first message in the series “The Space Between.” [To listen to the message in iTunes, click HERE.]

The thrust of the message came from the Prophets who confronted Israel during the latter years of its so-called ‘Golden Age’. Despite the lip service Israel was giving to God, despite their prosperity and overall abundance, despite the numerous religious activities that were going on at the time, the message of the Prophets thundered against the culture. Like Ke$ha, they had religion on their “neck-a-lace-es-es-es”, yet injustice and oppression of the poor was the norm.

Fast-forward nearly 3,000 years to Charlotte in the 21st century. We have more churches per person than any other city in America (700+ and counting); we are “the City of Churches.” The VAST majority of Charlotte citizens claim to be Christian…

…yet, like Israel, there is a Space Between the proclamation of faith and the reality of injustice and social ills. The message of Amos, Hosea and Isaiah to Israel is likewise God’s message to us!

As part of the worship service, Dave asked me if I would do a live painting during both the worship time (led by special guest Kristian Stanfill from Atlanta!) and his message which would visually capture the essence of the teaching. I love doing live painting at CharlotteONE:, so I agreed without hesitation…on one condition: that afterwards we would auction off the painting and give half of the proceeds to Charlotte area ministries which were dedicated to serving the poor and disenfranchised in our city. He was all for it.

Here is what it looked like!

After the service, I brought the painting home and added some finishing touches. Here is the finished work, “The Space Between”:

Close ups:

The size is 40″ x 60″ and the medium is oil.

As stated above, we are auctioning off the painting!

Half of the proceeds will go A Child’s Place, a charity that works to erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education.

The other half will go to support the ministry here at Disciple Dojo.

So bid high and support TWO great ministries here in Charlotte–one which focuses on physical care of those in need, and one which focuses on spiritual nourishment for hungry Disciples!

This would be a great piece for a business, church, ministry, school, or corporation to purchase for a good cause as well, so spread the word–Facebook, Twitter, email, homing pigeon, whatever!!

Thanks to CharlotteONE: for letting me partner with them in this way!
