“The Office” creator shares holiday thoughts on his atheism

Before there was Michael Scott…there was David Brent!

Over at the Wall Street Journal today, comedian Ricky Gervais posted an essay entitled: “A Holiday Message from Ricky Gervais: Why I Am an Atheist“.  If you don’t know who Ricky Gervais is, he is the man responsible for creating one of the funniest TV shows of all time–“The Office”…and no, I’m not talking about the American version with Steve Carrell!  If you have not seen the original British version, you are sorely lacking when it comes to television comedy!

Gervais is, by any account, a comedic genius.  His timing, wit, ability to ad-lib and unique mannerisms are all simply brilliant.  Therefore it comes as a shock to many people when they find out how outspoken of an atheist he is.

However, as his essay demonstrates, Gervais’ atheism is not something he embraces for shock value or as a gimmick (comedy is one of the few careers in which atheism can lead to great success, as George Carlin, Sam Kinison, Bill Maher, Sarah Silverman, etc.).  Rather, Gervais describes his outlook and how he arrived at it, including the conversation within his family that led him down the path to atheism–a path that he described travelling “in less than an hour”–and his outlook now regarding the claims of those who believe in God.
