Girl Power is cool and all…but what about Boy Power?

Hi Dojo readers,

I came across this TED talk and wanted to share it because it’s incredibly thought-provoking.

As a women’s self-defense teacher AND a proud uncle who has thoroughly loved introducing his nephews to characters like Chihiro (“Spiritied Away“) and Satsuki & Mei (“My Neighbor Totoro“), and Lucy (“Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe“) I could not agree with the speaker more.

We can’t just focus on empowering girls…we also have to focus on empowering boys to see girls as potential heroes, teammates, and even (gasp!) leaders rather than mere trophies or background decoration.

This doesn’t mean that movies with male heroes or about boys’ adventures are bad or wrong in and of themselves. Just that we have to be mindful in teaching our children that heroes aren’t always the Samsons out there.

Sometimes they’re the Deborahs.

Take a few minutes to listen to this and then feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below…
